“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2
Our God is a living God walking among us today. The same way he moved in the beginning of time. The Holy Spirit is alive today just as the Spirit of God hovered over the waters in the beginning. Think of the beauty of that statement and picture the Holy Spirit in your mind however you may hovering over the earth. Did you see a dove peacefully floating over the water? Perhaps a flame slowing weaving through the air as it passed over the waters? Whatever you envisioned, the Holy Spirit was not stagnant.
The Holy Spirit moved throughout the Old Testament guiding David, strengthening Job, departing from Saul. The Holy Spirit is an active participant in the word of God dancing his way through history as the hymn, “Lord of the Dance” portrays. The Holy Spirit dances in the beginning as the world begun and dances through the crucifixion of Jesus. Never resting; never tiring; never leaving.
Too often we put the Holy Spirit on a shelf. Knowing he is there provides us comfort, but we fail to understand the Holy Spirit is an active being. The Holy Spirit yearns to be in the world among God’s people. Sitting on a shelf is not his purpose. His purpose is to dance and lead us in our dance as we worship and follow Jesus, “I am the life that’ll never, never die; I’ll live in you if you’ll live in me; I am the Lord of the Dance, said he.”
How are you putting the Holy Spirit in a corner? Is there one part of your life you cling to tightly? We can sometimes fully give the Holy Spirit autonomy in some areas while also saying no not this with another. The Holy Spirit is not meant to sit still; the Holy Spirit is meant to leap up high and guide our eyes higher. The Holy Spirit was in the beginning hovering over the water and dancing throughout scripture.
Today I pray:
Come Holy Spirit; dance in my life and lead me wherever you should have me be.
